A Great Year at Newton Baseball
|
Congratulations to all the ball players from Newton for fine spring and summer seasons.
In the spring Newton teams did excellent in all Divisions. In the Mosquito Division the Indians had quite a year winning the Ross tournament and both the League and Playoff championships. In the Pee Wee A Division, out of 24 teams, the Newton Yankees finished first, the Newton Cardinals finished second and the Newton Indians finished fourth. The Newton Pirates captured the tier two playoff title going undefeated in the playoff round. The Double AA Pee Wee Blue Jays were the playoff champions beating arch rival North Delta in a hard fought final. In the Bantam Division the Newton Marlins won the League Championship with the Newton Blue Jays finishing second and the Newton Athletics finishing fifth. In the Midget AAA Division the Newton Tigers finished first overall and were the top rated team in BC heading into the Provincials.
In the summer season Newton fielded one team in the Tadpole division, three teams in the Mosquito Division, three teams in the Pee Wee Division, two teams in the Bantam Division and one team n the Midget AA division. The Tadpole Red Sox were all first year players and though they struggled early they stuck together as a team and ended up beating Surrey in a close contest. The Mosquito Single A Cubs and the Double A Yankees struggled at times on the bats but fought hard every game, never gave up and proudly represented Newton, on and off the field.
The Mosquito Triple AAA qualified for the Provincials and brought the Provincial title home with a perfect 6 - 0 record completed by a resounding 10 - 0 victory in the finals against Chilliwack. The Pee Wee single A division fielded two teams and both were competitive. The Newton Cubs barely missed qualifying for the provincials while the Newton Pee Wee Red sox won their Division and qualified for the Provincials. Both teams battled hard until the last out and made all the members of Newton Baseball very proud. The Pee Wee AA were the class of the field in their division only losing one game the whole summer season and winning the Provincial Championship in convincing fashion over Chilliwack 18 - 1. The Pee Wee AA are off to the Western Canadian Championships and we are very confident that they will compete hard for that title.
The two Bantams single A teams were picked evenly and although neither advanced to the provincials the kids fought hard and made Newton proud. The Bantam AAA qualified for the provincials and had some close games but never gave up and again represented Newton with Pride. The Midget AAA won the Provincials in a hard fought battle coming up with a 3-1 victory over a Victoria team that went undefeated in the round robin. Out of all of the Divisions the kids brought home three provincial championships to where they belong, – Newton, home of the champions.
We also cannot forget that two Newton girls made the Provincial Pee Wee team and will be competing at the Western Canadian Championships, held in Newton starting August 14, 2008. Way to go Emily and Josee.
What is apparent from the past spring and summer ball seasons is that Baseball is alive and well and thriving in Newton.
