Welcome to the 2013 Season

Umpire assignments will be done primarily by email through the scheduler system as happened last year. Assignments will be given out and the umpire will have 48 hours to accept or reject the assignment. Otherwise, the assignment may be moved to another umpire. Once accepted, an assignment is expected to be fulfilled unless there is a very good explanation. Giving up an assignment for insufficient reason may result in the loss of future game assignments.

Access codes are issued when 1) BCBUA membership is paid AND 2) the umpire has requested a 2013 code.

New this season: A Mentorship Program is being expanded with trained mentors working the lower to intermediate levels. Written feedback forms and in some cases written performance evaluations (by BCBUA trained evaluators) will be implemented.

There is a partnership arrangement through scheduler to provide assignment opportunities in Richmond, North Delta or Newton.

All plate umpires from Bantam and up must supply their own protective gear. PeeWee plate umpires are encouraged to obtain inside protection as well.

DRESS CODE FOR ALL UMPIRES

All umpires must wear official shirts, BC umpire hats gray pants, dark socks, black runners or shoes and cups (in case you need to go behind the plate) when they take the field.

For equipment needs, contact David Barry, the Newton Treasurer.

All umpires will be required to be members in good standing of BCBUA. This can be accomplished by registering at www.bcbua.ca and processing a membership registration. You may register for a Level 1 or Level 2 clinic there as well. NOTE: Level 1 umpires will only be assigned games in Newton if they have attended a clinic and are born in 2001 or earlier. Level 2 umpires 19 or older can register and not attend a clinic.

Be aware that assignments are being done for the whole season. I am trying to ensure a good number of games are assigned to everyone. You are encouraged to get your availability into the scheduler system because there may not be many games left and available for you should you turn games back.

North Delta and Richmond also uses scheduler and you may be contacted directly for games for them should you wish.

As a reminder, you need to confirm your games in the scheduler system within 48 hours or risk having them re-assigned.

Payments

You will receive your payments by cheque calculated by month. April's games will be paid within the first 2 weeks of May. Once the cheques are ready, they will be either mailed out or left at the concession for pick-up.

Rates this year (2013) are: (plate, then base)

Mosquito (Spring) - $20/$16 (Summer) - $22/$18

Mentorship top up will also be added in selected games.

Membership rebates will be added to the cheque in the month when the 4th game has been done.

The website newtonbaseball.com has field information posted on the main page near the top. If the site indicates the fields are closed, games are cancelled for that day. I am supposed to be phoned when a cancellation or change happens within 24 hours of the scheduled game time and will phone your contact number as soon as I am aware of a change. Otherwise, show up at your game.

You are expected to be at the field ready to go no later than 15 minutes before game time.

I MUST be phoned or emailed as soon as you get home if you have an ejection, your partner doesn't show up or you have any significant occurrence at the game.

If you are not able to fulfill an assignment that you have already accepted, I MUST be phoned and know the reason why. Do not rely on email for that.

My phone numbers are
Home: 604-271-3889 (preferred)
Cell: 778-891-3941

An ejection means you MUST file a written report (see bcbua.ca for information) within 24 hours. If I do not get the report and find out about the ejection, you risk losing your game fee.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks
